چکیده

Status of this Memo This memo provides information for the Internet community. It does not specify an Internet standard of any kind. Distribution of this memo is unlimited. Abstract This document analyzes issues involved in the transition of "unmanaged networks" from IPv4 to IPv6. Unmanaged networks typically correspond to home networks or small office networks. A companion paper analyzes out the requirements for mechanisms needed in various transition scenarios of these networks to IPv6. Starting from this analysis, we evaluate the suitability of mechanisms that have already been specified, proposed, or deployed.

A Scenario-Based Review of IPv6 Transition Tools

Momentum for IPv6 transition is on the rise, and many transition tools and techniques are available to ISPs, enterprise networks, and unmanaged networks. T he rationale for introducing IPv6 is beginning to sway many network providers in commercial and research environments. 1 Among IPv6's unique benefits over IPv4 are increased address space, simpler " plug and play, " network security, and imp...

IPv4/IPv6 Transition Mechanisms

Currently, the Internet consists of native IPv4 (IPv4-only), native IPv6, and IPv4/IPv6 dual networks. Unfortunately, IPv4 and IPv6 are incompatible protocols. When both IP versions are available and the users of Internet want to connect without any restrictions, a transition mechanism is required. During the time of migration from IPv4 to IPv6 networks, a number of transition mechanisms have b...

Global Mobile IPv6 Addressing Using Transition Mechanisms

The adoption of the Internet Protocol in mobile and wireless technologies has considerably increased the number of hosts that can potentially access the global Internet. IPv6 is considered the long term solution for the IPv4 address shortage problem, but the transition from IPv4 to IPv6 is supposed to be very gradual. Therefore, there will be a long time during which both protocol versions will...

The Applicability Analysis of IPv6 Translation Transition Mechanisms

Due to the exhaustion of IPv4 address resources, the transition from IPv4 to IPv6 is inevitable and fairly urgent. Numerous transition mechanisms have been proposed to solve challenging issues of IPv6 transition. An inter-connection between IPv4 and IPv6 networks or hosts requirement has been happening throughout the IPv6 transition process. And one-time translation scheme is indispensable to a...

An Incremental Carrier-Grade NAT (CGN) for IPv6 Transition

Global IPv6 deployment was slower than originally expected. As IPv4 address exhaustion approaches, IPv4 to IPv6 transition issues become more critical and less tractable. Host-based transition mechanisms used in dual-stack environments cannot meet all transition requirements. Most end users are not sufficiently expert to configure or maintain host-based transition mechanisms. CarrierGrade NAT (...
